Pilot Project Success: 3D Digital Engineering and Construction for Roadways
The Route 85 Slingerlands Bypass Extension, designed by Creighton Manning Engineering (CME) and built by Delaney Construction for the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), was a typical project with a typical scope: to sustain the route, expand vehicular capacity, and improve safety. But how the team achieved these goals was very novel. This webcast will detail how this pilot project used fully-digital field data for 3D, machine-guidance for stakeless construction, inspection, and as-builts. The project was such a success, Delaney Construction and NYSDOT were awarded the Informal Partnering Award by the Association of General Contractors and CME won the Be Inspired Award for Innovation in Roads from Bentley Systems, Inc. This presentation highlights the successes and challenges associated with this progressive project. .

Victory Achieved with Stormwater Modeling at Raceway Park
Just like a race car driver strives to drive better and faster, engineers are always searching for ways to improve and speed the design process for challenging projects. For stormwater systems, modeling can be the extra boost to help them achieve these goals victoriously. Join us for a case study presentation by Shawn Butler, CADD manager at Paulus, Sokolowski, & Sartor, LLC (PS&S), who will discuss the process of designing Thunderbolt Raceway Motorsports Park’s complex stormwater system and demonstrate how StormCAD and PondPack modeling solutions helped the design engineers complete the first phase of this project. He’ll share how calculation iterations were achieved quickly; how time was saved by coordinating calculations, plan view drawings, and profiles; and universal best practices for modeling stormwater systems.

Green Solutions for High Flow Channels and Shorelines
This webcast will focus on design solutions for critical applications, such as high flow channels and shorelines, using geosynthetically reinforced vegetated systems. Experts will cover current industry testing on reinforced vegetation systems, alternative designs to rock and hard armor, and how to offer green solutions for head-to-tail channel scour protection and shoreline stabilization. Attendees can expect to learn how to achieve effective reinforced vegetated systems from project start to completion, and through all three phases of vegetation development (unvegetated, partial vegetation, and full vegetation). Speakers will address current perceptions of reinforced vegetation performance and introduce new soft revetment and scour protection systems.

Vegetated Alternative to Rip Rap for Scour Protection
Evolving environmental regulations are influencing the development and application of erosion control technologies. Historically, products and solutions have emerged through trial and error in the field, with limited engineering data and many “rules of thumb.” Hard armor has been the standard remedy for addressing extreme hydraulic conditions. The presenter will discuss a no-maintenance, vegetated, NPDES-compliant alternative to rock rip rap that has demonstrated day one performance — the ScourStop transition mat technology. The webcast’s emphasis will be on particulars of multi-year hydraulic testing at Colorado State University, which confirm performance results that meet or exceed those of conventional hard armor solutions for scour outlet protection.

Part 4: BIM and Sustainability for Roadway Drainage Design
While much of the focus on sustainable design practices has been on buildings, the civil engineering community is showing it can make significant contributions to diminishing the environmental impact of the built environment, particularly roads and highways. In this presentation, we will discuss key trends in sustainable design, review sustainable design approaches, and show how working in a BIM environment enhances the delivery of more sustainable designs. Through examples you will see how working in a model-based environment facilitates the drainage design process, one of the ways engineers can impact the sustainability of roads and highways.

Part 3: Accelerating BIM ROI with Interoperability Standards
The implementation of engineering software should start with the development of standard workflows that are independent of a drafting platform. In this presentation, Bradley E. Adams, P.E., a consultant who worked with the Colorado Department of Transportation to assist them with the development of CAD standards and standard process workflows for design and drafting, will discuss key lessons learned from that engagement and report on its return on investment. He will further discuss the benefits of supporting dual platforms for drafting and design and explain how interoperability standards can result in increased competition for projects that may lead to reduced costs for government agencies. Then, Autodesk Technical Marketing Manager, Karen Weiss, P.E., will demonstrate the enhanced functionality in the AutoCAD 2011 family of products, which give users a competitive edge while fulfilling their clients’ CAD and technical requirements.

Integrating Civil Engineering and GIS
There is an abundance of existing data available for engineers. Much of that data resides in geospatial databases and maps. With today’s software tools, this information can easily become part of the federated data for Civil Information Modeling. Further, after design and construction are complete, design and as-built information can easily be used to update the spatial accuracy and content of a GIS. This presentation will explore how GIS and civil engineering are evolving to complement one another.

Program Management for Collaboration, Standardization, and Overall Success
To deliver successful projects consistently with appropriate value and return for all stakeholders, the AEC industry needs to review the personal and contractual processes, relationships, and dynamics at play among owners, contractors, designers, and the entire supply chain. Moreover, the industry must also review core enabling technology solutions and how they interact to help ensure a return on investment. Jayan Chacko will discuss how an integrated program management solution enhances collaboration and provides an interoperable and scalable platform to enable efficient, standardized processes and deliver projects on time and on budget through increased agility, productivity, predictability and efficiency. Also, Christine Brack, PMP, will discuss how to cater solutions to meet stakeholders’ information needs. Before management processes can be executed, it’s essential to establish the informational needs of the major stakeholders and decision makers. What are their terms for return on investment? How do they define success? How do they prefer to interface? Elaborate program management processes and solutions take us only so far — if they deliver project information in a format non-conducive to the way stakeholders need to present to their superiors — we’re not getting the most out of it.

Water Infrastructure Design & Management Webcast Series, Part 3
Automation Innovations in Stormwater Modeling
Automation innovations in Autodesk’s recently released water resource engineering software allows civil engineers to more efficiently and economically complete stormwater analysis and design projects. This presentation showcases a stormwater project in which a major engineering firm was able to complete a 30 square mile metropolitan stormwater management plan in half of the time that it would normally have taken. This project incorporated wetlands, ponds, streams, and stormwater pipe and ditch networks, and the stormwater management plan had to accommodate 10 and 100-year storms and comply with city, county, state and federal EPA standards. This project was completed within 5 weeks, using a variety of CAD and GIS source data to construct the model. The final model was turned over to the city stormwater utility department to use on future projects, particularly in evaluating the impact of new developments on existing structures.
