Walter H. Kraft Inducted into the ITS-NJ Hall of Fame

NEWARK, N.J. — Dr. Walter H. Kraft, P.E., VHB principal, was inducted into the Intelligent Transportation Society of New Jersey (ITS-NJ) Hall of Fame at the organization’s annual meeting in December at MetLife Stadium. Kraft presently serves on the ITS-NJ Board of Directors.

Kraft has worked in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area his entire career, with considerable focus on the planning, design, implementation, integration, operation, and maintenance of ITS and transportation technology. He has global experience across North America, Europe, and Asia, including the management and performance of ITS projects in numerous states across the country, Singapore, Hong Kong, and New Zealand.

Kraft is a frequent lecturer, presenter, and author on various aspects of transportation, including co-authoring a 495-page book on “Traffic Control System Operations: Installation, Operations and Management,” published by the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) in 2000. Kraft was the 60th elected honorary member of ITE and a former International President. He was also the founding chair of the ITE ITS Council and was a member of the National Steering Committee on Operations, organized by ITE for the Federal Highway Administration to promote national awareness of the operations of transportation facilities. He was editor of the award-winning “ITE Information Report on the Management and Operations of ITS” and editor of the sixth edition of ITE’s Traffic Engineering Handbook.

In 2013, Kraft was named a Member Emeritus of the Transportation Research Board’s (TRB) Committee on Regional Transportation Systems Management and Operations, recognition by his peers of his exceptional service to transportation and TRB. Although much of his work has been here in New Jersey, his impact has been worldwide.
