S&ME acquires BBCM

RALEIGH, N.C. — S&ME Inc. took its first steps in expanding beyond its traditional Southeastern footprint by acquiring Ohio-based BBCM Engineering Inc. The deal, effective Oct. 3, results from S&ME’s purchase of the assets of BBCM. About 75 former BBCM employees joined S&ME, increasing the company’s employment to nearly 1,100. This staff will work from 27 offices in North Carolina, Ohio, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. |

Report: Upgrading water systems can reduce pollution and put nearly 1.9 million people to work

MILWAUKEE — A new report — Water Works: Rebuilding Infrastructure, Creating Jobs, Greening the Environment — released by Green For All, in partnership with American Rivers, the Economic Policy Institute, and the Pacific Institute looks at an investment of $188.4 billion in water infrastructure — the amount the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) indicates would be required to manage stormwater and preserve water quality. According to the report, that investment would inject a quarter of a trillion dollars into the economy, create nearly 1.3 million direct and indirect jobs in related sectors, and result in 568,000 additional jobs from increased spending. |

ALBANY, N.Y. — On Friday, Sept. 23, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law Bill A.4581-A (Canestrari)/S.2987 (LaValle) allowing non-licensed professionals to hold a minority share of ownership in New York’s engineering and architecture firms. The new law permits up to 25-percent ownership by employees other than licensed design professionals, such as corporate counsel, information technology, and business development specialists. |

WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. – A team of Purdue University researchers has invented a prototype water-disinfection system that could help the world's 800 million people who lack safe drinking water. The system uses the sun's ultraviolet radiation to inactivate waterborne pathogens. Sunlight is captured by a parabolic reflector and focused onto a UV-transparent pipe though which water flows continuously. |

Bureau of Reclamation enters agreement to explore recycling of lime sludge into 'green' concrete

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Bureau of Reclamation's Yuma Area Office is entering into a cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA) with Envirock, Inc. to explore whether sludge from the Yuma Desalting Plant (YDP) can be used in a new green concrete mix formulation. Should the project be viable, it could more broadly benefit the nation's water treatment industry by helping to reduce operating costs and improve sustainability. Lime softening is used extensively in water treatment processes and is estimated to add 7-10 percent to the cost to treat the water. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that water treatment facilities dispose of 6.8 million tons a year of sludge solids. |
