EXTON, PA. — Bentley Systems Inc. announced the winners of the 2011 Be Inspired Awards. The awards honor the extraordinary work of Bentley users improving the world’s infrastructure. They were presented during the annual Be Inspired: Thought Leadership in Infrastructure event, held Nov. 8-9, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Five independent panels of jurors, comprising accomplished Bentley users and distinguished industry experts, selected the Be Inspired Awards winners from 57 finalists. These finalists had been previously chosen from the nominations submitted by 270 organizations in 42 countries. |

Mobile completes work required under 2002 consent decree to address sewer problems

MOBILE, ALA. — Mobile, Ala., has completed all work required under a 2002 consent decree resolving the city’s violations of the Clean Water Act and Alabama Water Pollution Control Act. The city’s Board of Water and Sewer Commissioners has paid the original $99,000 (federal) and $15,000 (state) civil penalties, as well as stipulated penalties totaling $476,000, and implemented related environmental projects valued at an additional $2.5 million. As a result, on Oct. 25, 2011, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a notice of termination of the Consent Decree with the U.S. District Court. |

DETROIT — Showing its commitment to vibrant communities, Giffels-Webster is moving its headquarters to its existing Detroit office, and its Oakland County location to a new Birmingham, Mich. office. The civil engineering and surveying firm’s Detroit office is expanding its existing space to accommodate triple the staff. It will house the executive offices and accounting department, as well as teams of civil engineers and surveyors — making it the company’s largest office. Giffels-Webster is currently applying for headquarters status with the city of Detroit. |

EPA develops new planning approach to improve water quality in U.S. cities

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a commitment to using an integrated planning process to help local governments dealing with difficult financial conditions identify opportunities to achieve clean water by controlling and managing releases of wastewater and stormwater runoff more efficiently and cost effectively. The integrated planning process, outlined in a guidance memo to EPA’s regional offices from EPA’s Office of Water and Office of Enforcement and Compliance, will help municipalities prioritize infrastructure investments to address the most serious water quality issues and provide flexibility to use innovative, cost-effective stormwater and wastewater management solutions. |

Purdue reports surge in women in first-year engineering

WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. — Purdue University's College of Engineering has reported a nearly 31-percent increase in enrollment of first-year women for 2011-2012 compared to a year earlier. The college has 460 first-year women this fall, up from 352 a year ago. Beth Holloway, director of the college's Women in Engineering Program (WIEP), said that's the highest number ever for first-year women in engineering. Women account for 26.1 percent of the first-year engineering class, compared to 20.6 percent in 2010. |

Marcellus Shale Research Network to track shale region's water quality

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. — Development of a database that will be able to track potential impacts of Marcellus Shale activity on water quality is the focus of a new $750,000 research collaboration led by Penn State researchers. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the Marcellus Shale Research Network will consolidate and routinely update water data being collected by watershed groups, government agencies, industry stakeholders, and universities as a searchable database. The project also will facilitate and train additional community groups in how to organize, collect, and interpret water data. |

N.Y.C. DEP announces Staten Island expedited sewers and pump station upgrades

NEW YORK — Environmental Protection Commissioner Carter Strickland announced that the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is expediting a $10 million project to help reduce sewer back-ups in the Dongan Hills section of Staten Island during typical storms. The project includes $5 million for the rehabilitation of the Mason Avenue Pump Station, more than tripling its current capacity from 4.6 million gallons per day to 15.5 million gallons per day. The project also includes $5 million for upgrades to the local sanitary sewers on Naughton Avenue, Slater Boulevard, and Seaver Avenue, and the installation of a force main on Mason Avenue and Seaview Avenue. |

SAN FRANCISCO — More of California’s waterways are impaired than previously known, according to a list of polluted waterways submitted by the state to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and finalized by the agency. Increased water monitoring data shows the number of rivers, streams, and lakes in California exhibiting overall toxicity have increased 170 percent from 2006 to 2010. The action will lead to development and adoption of hundreds of pollution clean-up plans by California to restore waters to swimmable, fishable, and drinkable conditions. |

NEW YORK — The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) reached a draft agreement to reduce combined sewer overflows (CSO) into area water bodies. The agreement modifies New York City’s approach to improving harbor water quality, under which the city will invest an estimated $187 million in green infrastructure projects by 2015, part of a planned $2.4 billion public and private investment over the next 20 years. The city will also complete work on approximately $1.6 billion in gray infrastructure projects. |
