Arizona’s first commercial-scale wind farm completed
HOLBROOK, ARIZ. — Federal, state, and local officials, energy industry leaders, ranchers, and school children gathered to celebrate Arizona’s first commercial-scale wind power project at the dedication of the Dry Lake Wind Power Project. The Dry Lake Wind Power Project was developed and is operated by Iberdrola Renewables, the largest provider of wind power in the world. “Iberdrola Renewables intends to invest another $6 billion in new renewable energy facilities in the United States over the next three to four years,” said Martin Mugica, executive vice president for Iberdrola Renewables....

Landslide closes section of Washington SR 410 Chinook Pass
YAKIMA, WASH. — At 6 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and the Washington State Patrol (WSP) closed a 47-mile section of SR 410 when a quarter-mile section of the highway was uplifted and pushed into the Naches River. The hillside continued to move, threatening more property damage and redirecting the river, so nearby residents (approximately 60) were evacuated....

PBS&J + RS&H team selected as lead design engineers for new Fort Lauderdale Airport runway
FT. LAUDERDALE, FLA. — Broward County recently awarded the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) Expansion of Runway 9R/27L project to the team led by PBS&J + RS&H. The project, an $810 million capital improvement effort, is significant because it involves complete reconstruction of the south runway at FLL, expanding it from 5,000 feet to more than 8,000 feet in length. The project will span an active federal highway and railroad, require large amounts of fill, and the runway tunnel and taxiway bridges will be bid out as separate design-build projects....

Long Beach reports record low number of water main breaks
LONG BEACH, CALIF. — The Long Beach Water Department reported that during Fiscal Year (FY) 2009, the city of Long Beach experienced the lowest number of water main breaks ever in its history. The news comes on the heels of a Long Beach Board of Water Commissioners announcement made last week that reported the lowest annual citywide water demand since 1965. FRA receives 45 applications for high-speed rail funding
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) said that it received numerous applications from states and groups of states for the development of high-speed and intercity passenger rail programs for grant funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. These include 45 applications from 24 states totaling approximately $50 billion to advance high-speed rail corridor programs. North America forecast to install more than 40,000 wind turbines

TVA to raise the height of four dams
KNOXVILLE, TENN. — TVA is raising the elevation of four of its dams to help reduce the risk of flooding in the unlikely event of weather more extreme than any conditions ever recorded in the region. TVA will place temporary, wall-like structures on top of earthen embankments of the Fort Loudoun, Tellico, Cherokee, and Watts Bar dams in East Tennessee, raising the top elevation of each embankment about 4 feet. The extra height would prevent water from overtopping and damaging the earthen embankments....

Transportation Projects Roadmap

Stressed public budgets and delayed passage of long-term federal funding have taken a toll on many transportation infrastructure projects in the United States during the last year. Nevertheless, many significant projects are moving ahead. The inaugural CE News Transportation Projects Roadmap lists 50 notable transportation infrastructure projects in the United States - ranked by estimated cost - that are currently in some stage of planning, design, or early construction. The list includes 21 road/highway/bridge projects, 17 rail/transit projects, seven port/waterway projects, and five airport projects.
