Salt Lake transit project gets federal boost

SALT LAKE CITY—In early January, Acting Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Administrator Sherry Little, joined by Utah Transit Authority (UTA) officials and local leaders, signed a "full funding grant agreement" that will provide a $428.3 million federal grant toward extending a transit line from downtown Salt Lake to the growing cities of Murray, Midvale, West Jordan, and South Jordan. The 10.6-mile Mid-Jordan LRT line will open by December 2011. By the year 2030, the line is expected to carry 9,500 daily passengers, generate 3,700 new transit trips, and reduce the number of highway miles traveled by 65,000 daily....

Survey predicts strong growth for U.S. water market

NEW YORK—America’s water and wastewater sector appears set to decline in 2009 as capital expenditure on crucial infrastructure projects is cut back by 12.9 percent, according to Water Market USA, a report recently published by Global Water Intelligence. But in the longer term, much stronger growth is in store, as scarcity and the need for environmental protection and repair of decaying networks force the pace of investment. Restraints on borrowing, shrinking tax bases, and a drop in capital contributions from property developers have derailed investment plans, the report suggests. However, capital expenditure is expected to grow from $25.2 billion in 2009 to $49.7 billion in 2016....

The film showcases green techniques that are being used in urban areas to reduce the effects of stormwater runoff on the quality of downstream receiving waters. In December, the U.S. Conference of Mayors reported that in 641 cities of all sizes in all regions of the country, a total of 15,221 local infrastructure projects that could create more than 1 million jobs are "ready to go." Low levels of a host of man-made chemicals remain in public water supplies after being treated in selected community water facilities, according to a study by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The USGS analyzed water from nine selected rivers that are used as a source for public water systems. Low levels of about 130 of the man-made chemicals were detected in streams and rivers before treatment at the public water facilities (source water). Nearly two-thirds of those chemicals were also detected after treatment....
