AECOM joint venture wins contract to design Los Angeles Regional Connector Transit Corridor
LOS ANGELES ─ AECOM, as part of a joint venture, has been awarded a $21.5-million contract from the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The joint venture will provide planning and engineering services for the Regional Connector Transit Corridor, a two-mile transit link between the Metro Gold line, Metro Blue line, and Expo light rail transit (LRT) systems throughout downtown Los Angeles.

Construction spending drops to decade-long low
WASHINGTON, D.C. ─ Construction spending slumped 0.7 percent from $798 billion in December to $792 billion in January, the lowest seasonally adjusted annual rate since July 2000, the Associated General Contractors of America noted in an analysis of new Census Bureau data.

FMI releases Nonresidential Construction Index report for Q1, 2011
RALEIGH, N.C. ─ FMI's Nonresidential Construction Index (NRCI) report for the first quarter of 2011 gave an encouraging reading of 60.8 ─ the highest NRCI score FMI has recorded since starting this index in the fourth quarter of 2007. However, when FMI looked at the details for markets and backlogs, it is obvious that this isn’t a moment where the rising tide is lifting all boats.

Study finds use of private engineering firms for public projects cuts costs to New York State
ALBANY, N.Y. — An independent report released in January by the Polytechnic Institute of New York University finds that using private sector engineers versus public employees to design public works projects is at least 15 percent more cost efficient for New York State. According to the American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACEC New York), the new study, led by F.H. (Bud) Griffis, professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, Polytechnic Institute of NYU, validates an October 2008 study that found a 14 percent savings when using private sector engineers.

DENVER, COLO. — At the 42nd conference and expo of the International Erosion Control Association (IECA), held in Orlando, Fla., Feb. 20-23, 2011, the IECA board of directors installed Beth Chesson, CPESC, CPSWQ, as a new officer and held elections to determine new positions. Florida board approves settlement agreement with reservoir general contractor
CLEARWATER, FLA. ─ Tampa Bay Water's board of directors approved a settlement agreement with the Regional Reservoir’s general contractor, Barnard Construction. The settlement reflects the evidence gathered in the discovery process that shows that the soil-cement cracking at the reservoir was caused by the engineer’s design and not by any deficiencies in the actual construction of the embankment.

Civil engineering industry outlook - Part 1

While 2011 didn't offer too much progress in an economic turnaround, it seems that many people in the architecture, engineering, planning (A/E/P) and environmental consulting industries are adjusting to challenges. For 2012, increased stability is expected, although large changes don't seem likely.
