Departments of Energy and Interior announce funding to develop advanced hydropower technologies

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Steven Chu and U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced $26.6 million in funding for research and development projects to advance hydropower technology, including pumped storage hydropower. This funding is focused on development of innovative technologies that can produce power more efficiently, reduce costs, and increase sustainable hydropower generation at sites not previously considered practical. |

West Virginia receives $1 Million grant to develop state rail plan

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced $1 million for the state of West Virginia to develop a state rail plan that will serve as a blueprint for guiding the state’s rail investment strategies. The grant will be matched by $1 million from the State of West Virginia. The plan will inventory existing freight and passenger rail lines in the state and analyze the potential for new freight, high-speed, intercity and commuter corridors, including tourist railroads. |

OLYMPIA, WASH. — Federal and state officials signed documents on April 7 that guarantee Washington state will get $145 million in high-speed-rail funding originally intended for Ohio and Wisconsin. The signing by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) allow project teams to move forward and start work on improving and expanding Amtrak Cascades service in Washington. |

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. — The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC), San Mateo County Board President Carole Groom, and officials from the Bay Area Water Supply and Conservation Agency recently launched another $320 million in scheduled upgrades for the Hetch Hetchy Regional Water System. The four projects beginning construction in the Peninsula region are part of the SFPUC's $4.6 billion Water System Improvement Program and include upgrades to a reservoir system, water treatment plant, and regional pipelines. Together these improvements will allow the SFPUC to return minimum water service to more than 1 million people in San Mateo County and San Francisco within 36-hours of a major seismic event. |

FAYETTEVILLE, ARK. — The A/E/P and environmental consulting industry remains mostly white and male-dominated due to a set of reasons ranging from archaic hiring practices to fewer minorities seeking careers in the field, The Zweig Letter (TZL) revealed in a report March 21. According to an online survey of human resources professionals in the architecture, engineering, planning and environmental consulting fields, more than half of respondents described their firm as “not very diverse, with less than one third of employees being minorities.” |
