Blueprint outlines steps for resilient coasts
A coalition of insurers, public officials, risk experts, builders, and conservation groups unveiled a blueprint of policy changes and what it calls "common-sense actions" that could reduce economic losses from future storms and rising sea levels by as much as half along U.S. coastlines. Report: Consider relocation in flood-vulnerable areas
A new report by the National Academy of Engineering and the National Research Council concludes that levees and floodwalls surrounding New Orleans—no matter how large or sturdy—cannot provide absolute protection against overtopping or failure in extreme events. Administration releases high-speed rail plan
On April 16, the Obama Administration released a strategic plan for high-speed rail in the United States, including 10 proposed rail corridors. State dam officials estimate $50 billion repair need
LEXINGTON, KY—The Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO) estimated that the cost of rehabilitating the nation’s non-federal dams is $50 billion, including $16 billion for high-hazard-potential dams (those whose failure would likely cause loss of human life).
