American Rivers names America’s ‘Most Endangered Rivers’ of 2011

Washington, D.C. — American Rivers released its annual list of America’s Most Endangered Rivers. The conservation group put the Susquehanna River at the top of this year’s list, citing the rush to develop natural gas reserves in the region without considering the significant risk to clean water and public health. American Rivers added a “special mention” on the 2011 list for the Mississippi River, given the unprecedented nature of recent flooding and the opportunity to improve flood management for public safety and river health. |

Washington, D.C. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) released its work plan for the Army Civil Works program through the end of fiscal year 2011 (FY11). The work plan details how the Corps will execute the $5.065 billion Civil Works appropriation it received on April 15 when President Obama signed Public Law 112-10, the Department of Defense and Full-Year Continuing Appropriations Act, 2011. |

Corps opens Morganza Floodway gates

On Saturday, May 14, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began opening gates on the Morganza Floodway to lessen the chance of flooding on the Mississippi River in Baton Rouge, La., and New Orleans. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) announced bipartisan legislation aimed at creating jobs through upgrading our degraded water infrastructure in a way that is more affordable for water customers. The Sustainable Water Infrastructure Investment Act of 2011 (H.R. 1802) provides for the removal of state volume caps on private activity bonds (PABs) for water and wastewater financing. |

EPA: Upgraded water quality standards needed for portions of Chicago area waterway system

CHICAGO — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) notified the state of Illinois that water quality standards for portions of the Chicago and Calumet Rivers must be upgraded to protect the health and safety of people who recreate in these waterways. To attain the new water quality standards, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRDGC) will likely be required to disinfect sewage discharged into the waterway system from its North Side and Calumet treatment plants. MWRDGC ceased disinfection at these facilities in the mid-1980s. |

SAN FRANCISCO — URS Corporation reported its financial results for the first quarter of fiscal 2011, which ended on April 1, 2011. Revenues for the quarter were $2.32 billion, compared with the $2.21 billion recorded during the first quarter of 2010. Operating income for the quarter was $132.1 million, compared with the $125.2 million reported in the year-ago period. |

Groups sue to stop Chicago MWRD from dumping CSO in the Chicago River

CHICAGO — A coalition of conservation groups have sued to stop the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) from dumping raw sewage mixed with stormwater, as well as algae-fueling pollution, into the Chicago River system. Effluent from MWRD’s sewage treatment plants and combined sewer overflow (CSO) pipes regularly violate Clean Water Act standards in the river, the coalition claimed, impacting downstream waters from Chicago all the way to the Gulf of Mexico according to the suit. |

LOS ANGELES — AECOM Technology Corporation announced its financial results for the second quarter of fiscal year 2011, which ended March 31, 2011. AECOM reported net income from continuing operations of $58 million for the second quarter and diluted earnings per share (EPS) from continuing operations of 49 cents for the second quarter. This represents a decrease of 2 percent from net income from continuing operations of $59 million and a decrease of 4 percent from diluted earnings per share of 51 cents for the same period last year. |
