The global, full-service consulting, design, construction, and operations firm hosted the organization’s first Workplace Giving Campaign in 2003. This year’s month-long campaign raised more than $223,000, bringing total employee donations to $1,067,000. Water For People is a non-profit international development organization dedicated to helping people gain access to safe drinking water and improved sanitation. |

ADELAIDE, SOUTH AUSTRALIA — Research by Flinders University’s School of the Environment has shown that a shallow, high-rate pond system to treat wastewater will slash the loss to evaporation as well as boosting the rates of removal of bacterial and viral pathogens. The research results were presented at the International Water Association’s conference on Wastewater Stabilisation Ponds, hosted by Flinders from Aug. 1-3, 2011. |

Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District to spend $4.7 billion to cut sewer overflows

KANSAS CITY, KAN. — The Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD) agreed to make extensive improvements to its sewer systems and treatment plants, at an estimated cost of $4.7 billion over 23 years, to eliminate illegal overflows of untreated raw sewage, including basement backups, and to reduce pollution levels in urban rivers and streams, the Department of Justice and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced. This injunctive relief is historic in its scope and importance to the people of St. Louis, the EPA said. |

AECOM reports third quarter results

LOS ANGELES — AECOM Technology Corporation announced its financial results for the third quarter of fiscal year 2011, which ended June 30, 2011. AECOM reported net income from continuing operations of $74 million for the third quarter, or diluted earnings per share (EPS) of 62 cents. These results represent an increase of 14 percent over net income of $65 million — and an increase of 11 percent over diluted EPS of 56 cents — for the same period last year. Operating income for the third quarter increased to $110 million, 19 percent higher than the same period last year. |

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Construction spending edged up 0.2 percent in June as increases in private nonresidential construction outweighed continuing declines in private residential and public construction spending, the Associated General Contractors of America reported in an analysis of new Census Bureau data. The construction trade association’s chief economist, Ken Simonson, predicted further imbalances in spending, with further cuts in public spending likely to offset most or all of the gains in private investment. |

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced that the Bureau of Reclamation is providing $2.7 million in funding for studies in California, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, and Texas through the U.S. Department of the Interior's WaterSMART Program. A total of $1.8 million of the funds will be used to collaboratively study seven basins and identify adaptation strategies in the Western United States where imbalances between water supply and demand exist or are projected. The remaining $900,000 will be shared by eight water delivery systems to study ways to improve water efficiency and operations. |

Low-energy seawater desalination technology ready for full-scale testing

SINGAPORE – Having set a new energy-saving benchmark for seawater desalination, Siemens said it is ready to transition its technology to the product development phase. As a result of a research and development initiative that began in October 2008, a demonstration plant was built in Singapore to treat seawater to drinking water quality. According to the company, the results, presented at Singapore International Water Week, show that the new process reduces desalting energy by more than 50 percent compared with best available technology. Next, Siemens plans to set up a full-scale system in cooperation with Singapore's national water agency PUB by 2013. |
