ACI Foundation and councils announce leadership changes

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. –The ACI Foundation, a wholly-owned and non-profit subsidiary of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) that receives, administers, and expends funds for educational, research, and scientific purposes, announces leadership changes for its Board, the Strategic Development Council (SDC), and the Concrete Research Council (CRC).

Lee McIntire to retire as chairman of CH2M HILL

Denver — CH2M HILL announced that Lee McIntire will retire as chairman of the Board of Directors at the September 2014 board meeting. McIntire served as CEO from 2009 through 2013 and as chairman since 2010. He joined the firm in 2006 as president and COO. During that time, the company experienced significant growth, expanding in the U.S. and internationally.

Construction spending inches higher in May

Washington, D.C. — Total construction spending edged higher for the third straight month in May, as solid increases in private nonresidential and public construction outweighed a downturn in residential projects, according to an analysis of new Census Bureau data by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC). Association officials cautioned that the pickup in highway spending is in jeopardy of reversing sharply unless policy makers act urgently to shore up the federal Highway Trust Fund.

TDOT celebrates 100 years

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Transportation kicked off "100 Years of Moving Tennessee Forward,” a year-long celebration of its centennial as a state agency. The state statute creating the first state highway agency, the Tennessee Department of Highways and Public Works, became law on July 1, 1915. The department was tasked with creating a network of state highways and to perform and oversee construction and maintenance on state roadways.

FST commemorates 100th anniversary

Burlington, Mass. — On July 1, 1914, three prominent engineers with ties to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology — Frederic H. Fay, Charles M. Spofford, and Sturgis H. Thorndike — opened their first office. Though officially founded on June 8, the engineering firm's work truly began when they and their small staff settled in at 308 Boylston Street in Boston.

U.S. DOT outlines steps for managing impending Highway Trust Fund shortfall

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx sent letters to state transportation departments and transit agencies outlining steps the Department of Transportation (DOT) will soon be forced to take to manage the impending insolvency of the Highway Trust Fund. In both letters, Secretary Foxx outlined the department’s proposed plan while emphasizing the need for Congress to act in order to avoid such a shortfall.

Washington, D.C. — TRB is accepting papers for consideration as part of the program for the TRB 94th Annual Meeting, Jan. 11-15, 2015, in Washington, D.C., and for publication in the Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board (TRR). The spotlight theme for the 2015 TRB Annual Meeting is Corridors to the Future: Transportation and Technology.

Robert Madsen wins 2014 CFSEI Distinguished Service Award

Washington, D.C. — The Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute (CFSEI) named Robert Madsen, P.E., Senior Project Engineer at Devco Engineering, Inc. in Corvallis, Ore., as the recipient of its 2014 Distinguished Service Award. The award, which recognizes the significant contributions of an individual who has volunteered time, talent and resources to the cold-formed steel industry, was presented recently during the 2014 CFSEI Annual Expo and Meeting at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tenn.
