Students return to Gambia to improve flooded roadway

GLASSBORO, N.J. — Three Rowan University engineering students and a professor will be returning to Africa’s smallest country as part of the university’s Engineers Without Borders (EWB) program. The purpose of the trip is to help alleviate road flooding that severely impacts communities in rural parts of The Gambia.

The trip will also allow the students to continue the assessment started by last year’s Rowan EWB team of the approximate 2-mile-long road that serves eight communities.

Students involved in this trip are Sean Coffey, a sophomore civil and environmental engineering major; Steve Gardner, a senior civil and environmental engineering major; and Laura Thrall, a mechanical engineering major. The accompanying professor is Jess Everett, Ph.D., professor of civil and environmental engineering.

For more on this trip, visit the Rowan University’s EWB webpage.

Civil engineering industry outlook - Part 1

While 2011 didn't offer too much progress in an economic turnaround, it seems that many people in the architecture, engineering, planning (A/E/P) and environmental consulting industries are adjusting to challenges. For 2012, increased stability is expected, although large changes don't seem likely.
