MUSCATINE, IOWA — At a black tie gala on March 30, 2011, in Washington, D.C., Gregs Thomopulos, Chairman and CEO of Stanley Consultants Inc., received the 2011 Outstanding Projects and Leaders (OPAL) award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) for lifetime achievement in management. Based in Muscatine, Iowa, Stanley Consultants provides program management, planning, engineering, environmental and construction services worldwide.

Established in 1999, ASCE’s prestigious OPAL awards recognize individuals for life-long accomplishments and achievements that have made significant differences in five areas of civil engineering: construction, design, education, government, and management. The recipient of the Management OPAL award is honored for demonstrating exceptional management skills in his/her professional career.

Thomopulos began his career with Stanley Consultants as an intern in 1965, and rose through the ranks to become chairman and CEO. He became president in 1987, and during his tenure the company grew from 236 employees to 1,700. Net revenue grew from $11.5 million to $184 million, a compounded average annual rate of 15 percent over a period of 20 years.

During his career spanning more than 45 years, Thomopulos has led a number of Stanley Consultants' international projects — in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, the Caribbean, as well as projects in the United States. Thomopulos currently serves as the president of the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC). He is also on the boards of the University of Kansas School of Engineering; the University of Iowa Foundation; Kansas University Endowment Association and is a fellow of ASCE.

Throughout his career, Thomopulos has received numerous honors and awards, including the University of Kansas School of Engineering’s Distinguished Engineering Service Award; the 2010 Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Iowa; and the Distinguished Service Award from the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE). He has a master's degree in structural engineering and structural mechanics from the University of California at Berkeley and a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Kansas. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science degree in 2010 by the University of Iowa.
