AURORA, COLO. — Merrick & Company was recently named a charter member of the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI). The non-profit organization, established in February 2011, was founded “to develop and deliver a civil engineering infrastructure sustainability rating system as an element of a broader initiative to promote and deliver more effective and efficient engineered solutions to society,” according to ISI. The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), and the American Public Works Association (APWA) joined together to establish the organization and its new standards.

As a founding member, Merrick said it confirms its position as one of the nation’s leading engineering companies in the emerging field for delivering the new generation of sustainable solutions to our clients. This work supports Merrick’s Corporate Social Responsibility program — a program committed to the triple bottom line of environmental, economic, and social sustainability for the projects on which Merrick works and the communities it serves.

Merrick’s National Sustainable Infrastructure Director, Peter Binney, played a significant role in the development of the ISI organization and its standards as a lead author and serves as one of ISI’s inaugural board of directors. He is currently leading the further development of the various sustainable rating systems. Binney’s work involves guiding clients and project teams through the new standards and applications to specific projects. He finds ways to limit waste, control or eliminate use of hazardous materials, and to recycle or manage the use of construction materials.
