MACTEC developing airport pavement management system at two Florida airports

ALPHARETTA, GA. — MACTEC is developing an Airport Pavement Management System (APMS) for the Broward County Aviation Department (BCAD) at the Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and North Perry Airport (HWO). The company is partnering with HDR at both airports.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is one of the fastest-growing airports in the United States. Last year FLL ranked 22nd in the United States and 54th worldwide in passenger traffic. The airport has nonstop service to more than 55 U.S. cities and international service to Canada, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Mexico, Europe, and Central/South America.

North Perry Airport is a public airport located in Pembroke Pines, Fla., about five miles west of Hollywood, Fla. The general aviation airport, owned by the Broward County Aviation Department, is devoted exclusively to private and business light-plane activity.

“BCAD is going to convert the current pavement management system onto a database that is compatible with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) system,” said MACTEC Group Leader Morgan Dickinson. “This requires digitizing the runways and taxiways, and inventorying the current condition of the pavements. Ultimately, capital improvement plans will be based on the data in the pavement management system.”

Dickinson added that key tasks will include:

  • Assessing/documenting baseline conditions of each airfield pavement.
  • Establishing a local MicroPAVER database for FLL and HWO.
  • Customizing the local APMS to support additional condition analysis and rehabilitation planning.
  • Assessing current maintenance processes.
  • Analyzing condition and rehabilitation.
  • Recommending five and 10 year plans, including developing a long-term Capital Improvement Plan (CIP).
  • Conducting CIP and pavement inspection training.

The project is expected to be completed by the end February 2011.
