Chicago hosts world water conference

CHICAGO — The American Water Works Association (AWWA) will hold its 2010 Annual Conference & Exposition (ACE10), June 20-24, 2010, in Chicago. The conference features 14 in-depth, interactive workshops and more than 100 professional sessions comprising more than 550 presentations. According to AWWA, ACE10 will offer “unique events focused on diversity issues, young professionals, students, public officials, operators, and international attendees as the world’s water community gathers to explore the future of safe water, gain insight into cutting-edge research and best practices, and experience the latest products and services available today.”

Mark Shannon, professor at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will present the Monday Keynote Address and open the professional sessions on Monday afternoon. As the director of the Center of Advanced Materials for Purification of Water with Systems (the WaterCAMPWS) and associate director of the Center for Nanoscale Chemical-Electrical-Mechanical Manufacturing Systems (Nano-CEMMS), Shannon will offer insight into advancing nanoscale, microscale, and mesoscale science and technologies that address real-world problems.

In addition to the professional sessions, the ACE10 exposition will feature more than 500 providers of technology and services. A New Product Technology Showcase located in an exclusive area in the exhibit hall will feature the latest and greatest technology to address the water industry’s challenges. Companies are chosen to participate in the showcase by a group of AWWA volunteers, and selection is based on participating companies meeting certain criteria.

More information and online registration is available at www.awwa.org/ace10.

Civil engineering industry outlook - Part 1

While 2011 didn't offer too much progress in an economic turnaround, it seems that many people in the architecture, engineering, planning (A/E/P) and environmental consulting industries are adjusting to challenges. For 2012, increased stability is expected, although large changes don't seem likely.
