Educational opportunities abound this month

September 2010 » Departments » COMMENT

September is always a busy month. Children and many teachers head back to school, meaning new schedules and responsibilities for those with school-aged children; conference schedules pick up after a summer lull; and projects that need to be completed before the chill of winter break ground or their pace is quickened. CE News is going to add to your busy schedule because we have more free continuing education activities available in one month than ever before — just in time for those of you who need to fulfill continuing education competency (CEC) requirements before year’s end.

In this issue, we have a Professional Development Series article and quiz. If you’ve never taken advantage of one of these, it’s a great month to try it out. Read this technical article, take the companion quiz and submit it, and if you pass, you’ll receive credit for one professional development hour. It’s a free and easy method to meet your CEC requirements. This month’s topic should be a hit with many of you because it is about stormwater and sustainable design. The title is, “Rainwater Harvesting and Re-Use: A Tool for Stormwater Runoff Reduction.” Find it following page 18. Then visit www.stagnitomedia.com/cedu to find about 15 other articles and quizzes about various topics and earn even more credit.

In addition, you’ll find that the CE News Webcast Series is a convenient and worthwhile educational method. Register online for as many webcasts as you’d like — they are always free — and log on on the scheduled date and time using the link you’ll receive after registering. You’ll just need a computer and Internet connection (voice transmits through the web.) Our webcasts are always one hour long. If you ever miss one or would like to see one again, they are archived online at www.cenews.com/webcasts Here’s the lineup for September:

  • Sept. 14 at 2 p.m. EDT — Pilot Project Success: 3D Digital Engineering and Construction for Roadways
  • Sept. 15 at 2 p.m. EDT — Victory Achieved with Stormwater Modeling at Raceway Park
  • Sept. 16 at 2 p.m. EDT — Green Solutions for High Flow Channels and Shorelines
  • Sept. 29 at 12 p.m. EDT — Vegetated Alternative to Rip Rap for Scour Protection

Also, if you missed our Government Infrastructure eConference late last month and want to check it out, you can view the archived webcasts and explore the virtual environment. While you won’t be able to interact with other attendees, you’ll still be able to watch webcasts on-demand, download sponsor materials (such as whitepapers, brochures, and project case studies), and read through chats that took place on Aug. 25.

Finally, if you crave attending a live event, we’re hosting one of those too this month. The Best Firms To Work For Summit will be Sept. 28-29 in Las Vegas (www.bestfirmssummit.com). Whether or not your firm participated in our annual ranking of the Best Firms To Work For (results will be revealed in the October issue), this is a fabulous event for everyone who is interested in improving their workplace.

People often say that they go to live events hoping to learn one or two tips they can take back to their firm or organization to apply. But at this event, people tell me they leave with new focus, renewed spirit, facts, examples, insight, and inspiration — on top of those little nuggets everyone craves.

I hope to see you in Las Vegas. While I know it is a down year, that’s all the more reason to focus on your most important asset — people.

Civil engineering industry outlook - Part 1

While 2011 didn't offer too much progress in an economic turnaround, it seems that many people in the architecture, engineering, planning (A/E/P) and environmental consulting industries are adjusting to challenges. For 2012, increased stability is expected, although large changes don't seem likely.
