Removing radium from drinking water
Water Remediation Technology, LLC, (WRT) offers cost-effective, long-term solutions for reducing radium in drinking water to safe levels (5 pCi/L), as designated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). WRT’s Z-88 system operates by passing radium-contaminated water through a fluidized ion-exchange bed of zeolite-based treatment media, a patented mineral substance onto which the radium attaches. WRT technicians regularly exchange the treatment media and dispose of it in a licensed facility, safely reducing radium levels without impacting the local environment or re-contaminating the water supply.

Measure bi-directional flow in pipes and channels
Accusonic Technologies offers the Model 7510+ Multiple-Path Chordal Transit-Time Flowmeter. According to the company, the 7510+ handles the diverse range of flow measurement and monitoring applications found in the water and wastewater industries with the ability to measure flow bi-directionally in full pipes, open channels, and gravity-flow pipes flowing partially full through surcharged. The 7510+ offers a full range of industry-standard inputs and outputs for flexible communications options to existing SCADA or plant control systems. It provides multiple-path transit-time flow measurement, with a maximum of eight paths for accuracy in a pipe or channel where distorted flow profiles or cross flow components may exist. As many as four pipe or channel sections can be measured by one 7510+ flowmeter.

Primer for potable water tanks
Tnemec says its organic zinc-rich primer, Hydro-Zinc, is ANSI/NSF Standard 61 certified for potable water tank interiors. Available in two-component (Series 91-H2O) and single-component (Series 94-H2O) formulations, Hydro-Zinc contains low levels of Hazardous Air Pollutants, as well as a low level of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), making it compliant for both shop and field applications. Series 94-H2O is formulated to meet especially stringent VOC levels, making it ideal for use where strict environmental regulations are enforced. Hydro-Zinc uses a zinc dust, which meets the requirements of ASTM D520 Type III and, according to the company, contains less than 0.002 percent lead by weight.

UV disinfection system certified
Severn Trent Services’ UltraDynamics 8102-HO-200 ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system received validation test certification that conforms to the protocols prescribed by the EPA’s Ultraviolet Disinfection Guidance Manual (UVDGM). The UVDGM provides technical guidance on the application of ultraviolet light for disinfection of drinking water by public water systems. The 8102-HO-200 UV system provides an ultraviolet dose of 30,000 to 40,000 micro-watt seconds per square centimeter at a wavelength of 254nm UV energy for the deactivation of microorganisms. UV light is an effective method for inactivating waterborne pathogens and viruses and does not pose the handling safety concerns of traditional disinfectants such as chlorine.

Valve-replacement system
Hydra-Stop, a division of ADS LLC, introduces the Insta-Valve Plus, a seat wedge valve-replacement system. The new Plus design includes an industry standard bronze stem collar and a heavy duty valve stem. Insta-Valve Plus stops flow in all types of pipe (4 inches to 12 inches) including potable water mains, wastewater force and gravity mains, and industrial applications. It can be installed using existing Hydra-Stop equipment or as a stand alone system. The new design consists of a compression-molded hyperbolic parabola seating surface joined to the radial axis sealing area that, according to the company, optimizes the seal at both the pipe and the coupon removed location. A new centering plate improves positioning control.

Spray-applied tank lining
Chemline, Inc.’s CHEMTHANE 4200PW is a fast-set, spray-applied coating engineered for lining steel and ductile iron tanks and pipes for potable water-rated applications. The lining features 100-percent solids with no VOCs and is applied directly to a prepared steel, iron, or concrete substrate as a single coat, multi-pass product. Primers are not required. CHEMTHANE 4200PW is rated NSF-61 and is approved for drinking water contact in steel storage and distribution applications for immersion service.

Civil engineering industry outlook - Part 1

While 2011 didn't offer too much progress in an economic turnaround, it seems that many people in the architecture, engineering, planning (A/E/P) and environmental consulting industries are adjusting to challenges. For 2012, increased stability is expected, although large changes don't seem likely.
