ARTBA Foundation seeks 'Hall of Fame' nominations
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) Foundation is accepting nominations for the 2013 "Transportation Development Hall of Fame." The Hall honors individuals or families from the public and private sectors who have made extraordinary contributions to U.S. transportation development or demonstrated exceptional leadership over their lifetime. ASCE seeks comments on new professional standard
RESTON, VA. – The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is conducting a public comment period from Feb. 1 through March 18, 2013 on the new professional standard, Seismic Design of Pile-Supported Piers and Wharves. The new standard is intended to reflect the current practice of seismic design of piers and wharves, aspects of which differ considerably from conventional design of buildings or building-like structures. It will address their unique load combinations –including berthing and mooring loads that may govern the lateral load design in low seismic regions – in addition to geotechnical issues such as the potential for pile foundations to penetrate through weak soil layers. Other primary considerations include liquefaction, lateral spreading, and ground failures impacting slopes and earth structures.

PCA appoints new president/CEO
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Effective Jan. 1, 2013, the Portland Cement Association (PCA) appointed Gregory M. Scott as president and CEO. He will head the association from its Washington, D.C., office and represent PCA and its members before Congress and the White House. Scott joined PCA in January 2012 as the senior president of government affairs and was promoted to president in September.

AWWA launches symposium on biological drinking water treatment
DENVER – The American Water Works Association (AWWA) recently launched the 2013 Biological Treatment Symposium, to be held March 28-29 in Denver. The symposium will focus on biological drinking water treatment technology, operations, and monitoring strategies. The technical program will address ways to meet current and future regulatory requirements while ensuring continued public health protection during implementation and operation. More than 30 technical sessions will cover topics ranging from research perception, performance and practice, microbiological aspects of biotreatment, membrane pretreatment, trace organics, and more.
