Modular wetland filters stormwater
Modular Wetland System, Inc.’s Modular Wetland System-Linear (MWS-LINEAR) incorporates multi-level screening; two-stage hydrodynamic separation; media filtration using BioMediaGREEN to physically and chemically capture fine total suspended solids (TSS), metals, nutrients, and bacteria; a self-contained, subsurface flow wetland; variable-flow treatment; and complete system bypass. Two, 4-inch adjustable ball valves allow various flow rates to be set for primary and secondary treatment levels. According to the company, MWS-LINEAR addresses all pollutants of concern present in stormwater, including pathogens/bacteria, nutrients, and heavy metals. Both curb-and-grate and vault-type systems are available.

Treatment for sewer overflow
Hydro International’s Storm King is a vortex separation chamber with the option to incorporate non-powered, self-cleansing Swirl-Cleanse screening technology. According to the company, Storm King with Swirl-Cleanse can be used for floatables control, sedimentation and disinfection of combined sewer overflows (CSOs), upgrades to existing CSO facilities, new satellite CSO facilities, treatment of excess wet-weather flows at wastewater treatment plants, and treatment at centralized stormwater treatment plants. The Storm King can be designed to meet primary treatment equivalency for BOD and TSS removal, and has also been shown to be an efficient vortex mixing chamber for disinfection.

Designing pervious pavements
A new publication from the Portland Cement Association (PCA), Hydrologic Design of Pervious Concrete, provides an overview and discussion of design techniques to ensure effective hydrologic performance of pervious pavement. The publication considers the relationship between runoff characteristics, material characteristics, and site geometry. It also provides guidelines for preliminary selection of appropriate pervious concrete characteristics for specific applications and environments. According to PCA, Hydrologic Design of Pervious Concrete can provide civil engineers, landscape architects, and other design professionals guidance in selection and design of an appropriate pervious concrete pavement system and can aid permit-granting agencies in review and acceptance of proposed pavement systems.

Curb inlet filtration
Transpo Industries, Inc., offers an Open Curb Installation Kit for its EnviroSafe Modular Storm Water Catch Basin Filtration System. The kit, designed for open curb inlets, includes a cartridge basin with passive filters or a sediment sack, four supporting cleats, two aluminum rails, two mounting flanges, and one flow collector assembly with hardware. According to the company, EnviroSafe captures and filters many pollutants common to stormwater runoff, including trash, debris, sediments, oils, grease, and soluble metals. Filtering technology incorporates antimicrobial treatment that inhibits bacteria, virus, and mold growth.

Web-based alarm system
ADS LLC introduced the ADS Spider, a stand-alone, compact, single-box alarm monitoring system that requires no user software. It operates from a web server built into the monitor that allows direct communication with most computers via a browser and IP address. Eight monitoring inputs and outputs can be remotely programmed for almost any type and combination of monitoring and alarming, such as on-off notification, on-off controlling, alarm triggering, water quality, multiple depth levels, and pH measurement. Reporting specifications are user-defined and include SMS text messaging, e-mail, voice, personalized messages, repeatable settings, and elevated alarming to three levels.

Erosion control as a stormwater BMP
Propex says its line of erosion control products provides temporary and permanent erosion control for almost any stormwater application. Patented woven technology composed of a 3-D matrix of polypropylene yarns, Pyramat High Performance Turf Reinforcement Mats and Landlok Turf Reinforcement Mats are water quality solutions recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as best management practices that comply with the NPDES Phase II regulations. According to Propex, Pyramat and Landlok outperform and are more cost effective than conventional erosions control methods such as rock riprap and concrete paving.

Re-designed website
CULTEC, Inc., launched a re-designed website—www.cultec.com—that provides a general overview of stormwater and septic management, as well as detailed information about the company’s systems and applications. Other website features include a distributor locator, a product catalog, and a case study section that allows visitors to download PDF files with information on product applications. Additionally, online stormwater design calculators aid engineers in designing stormwater management systems. The Microsoft Excel-based program allows users to input job-specific requirements and site constraints that result in proposed chamber bed layouts. These electronic or hard-copy documents can then be incorporated into design documentation packages.

Semi-mobile flood protection system
The first full, U.S. installation of AquaFence, a flexible, semi-mobile flood-protection system from Norway, occurred during a demonstration in Mt. Vernon, Wash., in late September. AquaFence is a patented, transportable flood protection barrier that can rapidly be put into place when there is a danger of flooding. After the flood event, it is dismantled, stored, and made ready for the next flood. Each 6.5-foot by 4-foot (standard, other heights available) AquaFence section is self-contained, with everything attached needed to erect it, ensuring that parts aren’t lost during storage, transport, or deployment during bad weather. According to the company, water pressure provides strength and stability, ensuring that the AquaFence sections stay in place. A specially developed seal mitigates water ingress between AquaFence elements and the ground. In areas where there is a risk of heavy floating debris, a specially designed debris shield can be fitted.

Protection from stormwater erosion
PROFILE Products LLC’s GreenArmor system combines Enkamat Turf Reinforcement Mat with Flexterra Flexible Growth Medium to create a system that protects against elevated levels of hydraulic lift and shear forces on slopes and in channels while encouraging fast turf establishment and long-term root reinforcement. According to the company, the 3-D matrix of Enkamat’s thermally fused nylon filaments creates an ideal anchor for root reinforcement. And, because the lofty matrix consists of 95 percent open space, it readily accepts the hydraulically applied Flexterra infill, which bonds with the Enkamat matrix, seeds, and soil to provide immediate erosion control without cure time.

Remote water monitoring
Teledyne Isco’s Strato-Link satellite telemetry package provides a communication option for remote water monitoring sites where cellular telephone service is unavailable or unreliable. Strato-Link provides bi-directional communication with Isco 6712 series samplers (including the Isco Avalanche) via links with low-earth-orbiting satellites. Data are password-protected and can be retrieved from the company’s server via the Strato-Link web User Interface (UI). Users can download data in CSV format for use with Isco Flowlink software and spreadsheet applications. Applications include stormwater and surface water monitoring, isolated TMDL applications where personnel need alerts when runoff events occur, and any water quality analysis requiring remote control, data access, or alarming.
