April 2006 » New & Noteworthy

Erosion control specialists North American Green expanded its Erosion Solutions Specialist certification training program and now has more than 250 representatives from authorized North American Green distributors who have passed comprehensive exams and can assist engineers and contractors in designing and using erosion control measures for a wide range of applications. More than 30 representatives have passed an advanced program to become Advanced Erosion Solutions Specialists. The specialists, who must receive ongoing training to maintain certification, are trained in local, state, and federal regulations affecting the erosion control industry.

Design software

EnkaGreen erosion control design software from Colbond allows engineers to analyze various channel linings using the Federal Highway Administration—€™s Hydraulic Engineer Circulation design methodology. The program also can calculate slope linings using the U.S. Department of Agriculture—€™s Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation. Once slope or channel costs are calculated, the results can be analyzed and compared.

EnkaGreen has extensive help files and graphics and the ability to analyze user-determined Manning—€™s roughness coefficients. In addition, Haestad Flow Master results can be verified. A costanalysis module allows users to enter whatever tasks or materials are needed.

Online erosion control resource

The Erosion Control Technology Council (ECTC), a non-profit organization committed to advancing the use of rolled erosion control materials, recently redesigned its website. The new site (www.ectc.org) features sections including About ECTC and Rolled Erosion Control Products, Calendar of Events, Membership, Resources, Documents & Tools, and a Product Selection & Design Tool. The Resources section provides case studies, links to other industryrelated information, and details about educational courses offered by ECTC. Documents & Tools includes terminology, a searchable collection of documents, and up-to-date industry specifications.

Wildlife-friendly netting

Conwed recently announced the launch of NatureZone, a wildlife-friendly netting solution for environmentally sensitive erosion control projects. The company—€™s engineers studied snakes in their natural environment to help create the new design. NatureZone features altered apertures that allow snakes to move easily through the netting. According to the company, netting options allow for additional flexibility while maintaining the blanket—€™s strength for various fill materials, including excelsior and straw. NatureZone, which is available in biodegradable, degradable, and standard material versions, is part of Conwed—€™s environmentally focused EcoSeries line of degradable netting products.
